Young drivers can save 40% on car insurance with Motaquote and RSA Insurance Group
A new car insurance scheme designed to reduce the number of road accidents could also help save younger drivers money.
A GPS device developed by Motaquote in conjunction with RSA Insurance Group can track the time drivers aged 17 to 25 are on the roads. Those that are fitted with the device and refrain from driving between 11pm and 5am could cut car insurance costs by 40%.
The i-kube logs when the car is being driven and, while insurance cover is fully effective at all hours of the day and night, the driver will have to pay an additional premium of £45 each time they are found to have been driving between the forbidden “red hours”.
According to the developers, young male drivers are more likely to have an accident at night than anyone else, especially at weekends. And, although the overall number of deaths on UK roads has fallen in recent years, the number of fatalities among 16- to 19-year-old drivers and passengers has risen. Around 40% of accidents involving males aged 17 to 19 are thought to take place at night.
Nigel Lombard, managing director of Motaquote, said: “Young drivers remain in the age group with the highest proportion of insurance claims, road crashes and fatalities on our roads. As we go into the darker winter months, it is even more important to highlight these dangers.”
Because younger drivers tend to incur higher car insurance premiums, the number driving without any form of insurance is rising. It is hoped this new scheme will not only save lives, but will help ensure young people getting behind the wheel are covered should an accident occur.
Which? car insurance expert Dan Moore said: “One in five young people drive without insurance, partly because it is so expensive. Innovative policies such as this will hopefully go some way to reducing the number of uninsured motorists in the roads, and keep more your motorists safe.”
