Avoid car insurance claims this winter, Swinton car insurance advises

Car insurance provider Swinton is advising motorists to take extra precautions when driving in wet and icy conditions. Accident levels are always higher during the winter months, leading to a higher number of car insurance claims.

It suggests drivers should keep an emergency kit in the boot of the car in case of an accident or breakdown. This should, according to Swinton, include a charged mobile phone, an ice scraper and de-icer, a torch, warm clothes, a blanket, a pair of boots, a first-aid kit, battery jump leads and a snow shovel.

Swinton car insurance also reminds vehicle owners that it can take up to ten times longer to stop when the roads are slippery. It urges drivers to clear any snow piled up on the car roof, which can fall onto the windscreen and obscure the driver’s view. It also states that, if a vehicle starts to skid, motorists should turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid and depress the clutch.

Steve Chelton, insurer development manager for Swinton, said: “Driving during the winter can be extremely dangerous and can increase the chance of an accident. Motorists should always prepare their vehicles for the winter in case of an accident of breakdown.

“Before setting off on a journey, routes should be planned accordingly and we would recommend getting up ten minutes early to prepare the car.”

The Highways Agency is also advising motorists to take care in wintry weather. It says drivers should service their vehicle, check and replace anti-freeze in the radiator, keep lights clean and check bulbs regularly, ensure tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure and have at least 3mm of tread depth and to keep mirrors and windows clean.
